This article describes an easy-to-manufacture, low-loss light guide fiber that uses pure fused silica as the core and a loosely packed fluorine-4,6 sleeve over it. Because of their large numerical aperture (NA), these fibers are particularly suitable for transmitting incoherent light from white LEDs. Since loss is close to the core material (ie, 7.6 dB / km at 0.8 microns for 230 meter long Suprasil 2 fibers) at small light excitation angles; at steady state NA (0.3) they increase To 14 dB / km. The measured pulse dispersion is below 30 ns, which is consistent with the expected 24 ns for step index fibers with an NA value of 0.3.
