In order to suppress the local oscillator noise, thereby improving receiver sensitivity, many microwave receivers often use balanced mixers. Balanced mixers use two separate mixing devices that are excited in parallel with the signal by push-pull, or vice versa. A new hybrid mixer, the Orthogonal Waveguide Mixer, is lighter than the existing balanced mixers and is manufactured by Varian Associates. This hybrid mixer retains the expected characteristics and low noise performance of the Magic-T and short-slot mixers, but it is smaller and lighter. This design has special significance for the application of the no-load radar and the missile receiver, because the volume and weight must be carefully considered here.
