何为新闻背景?我们说,任何一件事物都不是孤立存在的,事物之间总是互相联系、互相制约、互为因果的。横的方面,它与周围同时发生的事物有一定的联系;纵的方面,它与过去的这种或那种事物也有不可分割的往来。所以,任何新闻事件都有它形成的时间、空间条件,有它产生的原因,即任何新闻都是在一定的环境和条件下产生的,因而写消息时就应当对与消息所报道的新闻事件有关的联系,作出恰如其分的介绍、说明,以帮助读者更好地理解新闻事件的意义。这就是我们通常说的写消息应交代的新闻背景。一些西方新闻学者认为,新闻要素中的WHY(为什么),即对新闻事实的产生原因和新闻事实本身作出解释,就是新闻背景。这种说法是有道理的。
