广州自秦汉以来已为华南的政治经济文化中心,并以海外热带特产的集散著称。列唐宋时期,广州更成为我国最大的港市,贸易范围远达西亚和东非。宋代的国力虽然不及盛唐,但它经束了五代十国割据纷争的局面,国內的农业和手工业比唐代有进一步的发展,特別是我国南方,由于遭受战争的破坏较轻,并有大量人民自北南移,经济的发展比北方更为迅速,逐使全国的经济重心逐渐南移。
