导读:冰岛人民很友善,会宽容地对待外来者和游客们。他们不会打量你也不会打探你的隐私。
It is not common to see a mad Icelander, but they will feel bad if you are rude. In order to have a nice trip, you should keep these tips in mind.
Take pictures of everything
If you are planning on taking photos of people and their homes, you better dress up like a new tourist, otherwise they may think you are a bad person. A camera pointed at the wrong person or object can get you in trouble. Don’t point your camera at everyone’s face, especially if the person is not interested in posing. This is also annoying everywhere else in the world.
Touch the swans
The wild Icelandic swans can be brutal, especially when it’s nesting. An adult bird can break a man’s arm to protect their young. Not only will it hurt a great deal, but you will look a fool to everyone else for trying.
Leave a tip
Icelanders do not expect tips for service. They will feel insulted if you leave them a tip. However, you can leave a tip for the cleaners once you check out of the hotel.
Be loud
With the exception of the lively weekend crowds in the downtown club districts, Icelanders are generally a quiet people. In fact, even the loudest place is still less noisy than elsewhere in the world. How do Icelanders recognize foreigners? They look for the loudest person on the street.
Enter a pool without showering first
Social gatherings in pools are like a national sport in Iceland. What make these pools so great are the strict hygiene rules that apply to them. Out of respect for these rules, you will be required to take a shower in your birthday suit before you may enter.
Pronounce things incorrectly
Unlike the rest of the non—English speaking European countries, you have to get by speaking English in Iceland, unless you had formal classes in the local schools. Icelandic is very difficult to speak, and even harder to pronounce. It is not that the locals will find you stupid when you are trying to speak their language, it is just that they don’t understand the words that are coming out of your mouth.
Vocabulary
brutal adj. 兇猛的
insult v. 侮辱,冒犯
hygiene n. 卫生
(What else do you know about Icelanders?)
