太昊、少昊之名源起于太阳崇拜。作为上古东夷集群的总名,它们最初所代表的实际历史时代约相当于考古的大汶口文化中晚期阶段。两集团的兴起有先后,但都曾以今鲁中南汶、泗流域为中心活动区,传说的太阳神树“扶桑”的原型即是古夷人祭祀“圣地”的社树。炎帝、黄帝名号的实质性起源应该大体与太昊、少昊同时,而由这些名号可以追溯的部族历史最早也只能上推到新石器时代中晚期之际。
