Objective To explore the epidemiological characteristics of injuries in the elderly aged 60 years and older in Zhejiang Province from 2009 to 2010, and provide a basis for scientific and effective prevention and control measures. Methods The information of senile patients with senile injuries (≥60 years old) from 28 sentinel hospitals in 9 districts of Zhejiang Province from 2009 to 2010 was collected through online reporting. The three distributions, injuries and consequences of senile injuries were analyzed. Results A total of 19412 cases of elderly injuries were investigated (sex ratio 1.14:1). The main direct causes were falls and falls, traffic injuries and animal injuries. The first three places were home, street / urban areas and work places. The injuries were concentrated The periods were from 8 am to 10 am and from 1 pm to 4 pm, with summer and autumn being higher than those in winter and spring. The top three injured parts of the elderly were the lower extremities, the upper extremities and the head. The severity of the injuries was mainly mild to moderate with serious injuries The proportion of males was higher than that of females (χ2 = 11.650, P <0.001). The main outcome was after treatment. Most of them were accidental injury, only 0.58% were self-injurious and suicide. The main cause of self-injury was poisoning. Conclusions Elderly injuries have their particularity in other aspects such as the time of occurrence, the place of occurrence and the type of injury compared with other age groups. Preventive measures should be taken in order to effectively reduce the incidence of injuries among the elderly.
