体操在我国有悠久的历史.它是我国各族人民喜爱的一项体育活动.但竞技体操的发展是在新中国成立之后.在党的领导下,在毛主席的“发展体育运动,增强人民体质”的号召下,随着国民经济的发展,人民生活的改善和群众性的体操运动广泛开展的基础上,逐步完善和发展起来的.一九八三年,我国运动员在第22届世界体操锦标赛中,第一次获得了男子团体冠军,从此,我国的体操运动,进入了世界先进水平的行列.这是我国竞技体操运动光辉的一页,是中华民族的骄傲.
