本世纪初,中国白话文挑战文言文的时候,它似乎不仅仅是一种交际工具,不像“天下之公器”。白话文本身已彰显特定的人文价值,已经自动履行着民主、科学、大众化、现代性等表达功能,与旧体制相对抗。在这个时候,形式就是内容,载体已成本体。白话文是反专制的语言,是反道统的语言,是人民大众通向现代化的团队口令和精神路标。一切阻碍政治和经济变革的腐朽势力,似乎都只能在文言文的断简残帛中苟活。
