In 2001, the trade volume of chicken meat was nearly 6 million tons, an increase of 800,000 tons or 15.4% over 2000. International trade accounted for 13.5% of the total output of chicken meat in the same year. The world’s top three exporters of chicken are the United States, Brazil and the European Union. Their chicken exports are 2.8 million tons, 1.25 million tons and 700,000 tons respectively. American chicken exports accounted for 46.8% of the world’s total exports in 2001; Brazilian chicken exports increased 38.2% over 2000, accounting for 21.1% of the world’s total exports; while the EU’s chicken exports dropped by 65,000 tons. The top three most importers of chicken are Russia, China and Japan, which import 1.3 million tons, 900,000 tons and 700,000 tons respectively. Russian chicken imports account for 26.9% of the total world imports, with China accounting for 18.9% and Japan 14.9%.
