中国画讲究用笔、用墨,强调笔法和墨色的表现。中国画家用毛笔、墨、宣纸等中国特有的工具与材料作画,用笔墨描写山川景物、人间万象,画面中所有形象的表现都与笔墨有着密切的关系,用笔的方式与方法、运笔的力度与速度、节奏与韵律以及墨色的焦、浓、重、淡、清等丰富变化,在画面中表现为画家的精神。笔墨是中国画的基本语汇,中国画是画家用笔用墨的表现结果。作为中国画表现语言的重要组成部分,笔墨传达的是画家的艺术个性、主观情感和艺术风格。画面上的笔墨效果是画家品性、情趣、艺术秉赋的自然流露,是画家艺术风格和个性特征的具体表现。在传统的中国画中,画家均以用笔和用墨来传达个人的心态和情绪,笔墨成为绘画表现精神的有力工具。
