Peter Vogt, a marine geophysicist at the Washington Naval Laboratory in the United States, collected data from all over the ocean, analyzed and studied the causes of the Earth itself, causing such phenomena as volcanism and orogeny. In the past, geologists generally believed that there are about 16 or so plates in the thin shell of the Earth, all of which drift at a constant rate corresponding to the growth of human nails. But Vogt and his collaborator John Brozner’s work shows that during the past decade creeps in all sectors have occasionally sprung. During this period, volcanic activity on Earth intensifies eruption activity and the rising mountains on Earth will also increase at a faster rate. If Vogt is right, then the mode of action within the Earth will have to be amended. The plate is shaped like a huge conveyor belt that sends the crust into the mantle and takes it out of the mantle again. The rock spewing out of the mid-ocean ridge
