The authors present the modern data on urinary and plutonic fission track analysis (FTA) and dose assessment, and summarize the estimates of internal doses of plutonium-239 in Rongelap and Utirik Island from 1981 to 1991. At present, the detection level (99%) of FTA-Pu-239 is 2-3 μBq, which is equivalent to an effective dose equivalent (EDE) of 0.2-0.3 mSv for Marshall residents aged 70 years. Most samples are below this level of detection. In 1991, the average effective dose equivalent of plutonium-239 for residents of Rongelap and Utirik Island was estimated to be 0.62 and 1.6 mSv, due to the high average values due to the few high data. This is the highest since 1988.
