Robert Edmund Jones (1887-1954) is a famous American stage designer and director, writer and scholar. His 1915 design for The Man Who Married a Dumb Wife marks the beginning of the new stage art movement in the United States, making him one of the major founders of the movement. His design concept of novel, rich imagination, full of artistic charm, praised by the world. After accumulating 25 years of work experience, he wrote the book The Imagination of Drama, published in 1941, immediately becoming a memoir and translated into many languages. The three passages in the book are now being translated: the first is from Chapter 2 “The Art of the Theater” (23--27, 33--34); the second is from Chapter V (Pages 88--91); the third is from Chapter 6, “Light and Shadow in the Theater” (111--128). These are considered to be the quintessential parts of the book and have been selected for Larson’s book, Set Design for Screens and Stages. It is also helpful to first read some of the highlights of Drama’s Imagination before it can be translated and published.
