Objective To explore the current situation of alexithymia in young caregivers with anxiety disorders. Methods Eighty-six caregivers of adolescents with anxiety disorders were selected as the research group. 80 parents or other primary caregivers with no history of mental disorder with age, gender and educational attainment were selected as the control group. Socio-demographic data were collected from both groups using the General Demographic Questionnaire, and the extent of empathy was assessed using the Toronto Symptom Checker Scale (TAS). Results The total scores of TAS and scores of each factor in the study group were higher than those in the control group (P <0.05). Logistic regression analysis showed that good family economic status (OR = 0.68, 95% CI: 0.38-0.87) in caregivers was a protective factor for adolescent anxiety disorder. Caregivers’ outward thinking (OR = 1.362, 95% CI : 1.14 ~ 1.48) is a risk factor for anxiety disorders. Conclusions Adolescents with anxiety disorders have described empathy as their caregivers, and their outward-looking ways of thinking and family economic status may be related to anxiety disorders in adolescents.
