1924年,国共两党合作后,中国共产党派林伯渠、董必武来汉口组织国民党中央执行委员会汉口执行部,领导鄂、湘、豫、赣等省的国民革命运动。汉阳兵工厂是中国当时最大的枪炮弹药生产基地。在全国轰轰烈烈的工人运动中,汉阳兵工厂工人阶级积极投入反剥削、反压迫的斗争。为了加强兵工厂的领导,党派曾在兵工厂当过艺徒的湖北省国民党工厂部部长丁觉群同志回兵工厂,协同中共支部书记金莲同志等宣传、发动群众,成立工会,发展党的组织,积蓄革命力量,准备迎接更人的斗争。此时的汉阳兵工厂很快成为风起云涌的革命风暴中心。
