The use of natural gas as a substitute fuel is good for reducing emissions and the global environment. It can also solve the locomotive operation in tunnels, diversify energy sources and save energy for countries like Iran. There are two ways to use natural gas on a diesel engine. One is to turn diesel into Otto cycle, a dedicated natural gas engine, and the other is a diesel dual-fuel engine using 80% natural gas and 20% diesel. Due to emissions and their environmental factors, dual-fuel engines using pilot injection are not suitable for heavy vehicles in the city, but can be used in intercity vehicles, especially in locomotives. In this paper, the advantages of natural gas as the most suitable alternative fuel for pilot injection are examined and the results obtained using this method in Iran and elsewhere are discussed. In this paper, the difficulties of how to use natural gas for diesel engines and how to deal with them are put forward. The methods of Iran’s engine modification of locomotives and the construction of natural gas fuel stations for refueling fuel tanks are also introduced. The right approach to retrofitting a locomotive engine draws on the author’s experience with retrofitting teflon-fueled urban buses.
