This article studies the use of chromium content as an indicator of tannery exposure to chromium. Because earlier reports of serum chromium and urinary chromium increased significantly in tanners over unexposed controls, trivalent chromium compounds were considered to be used in the tanning industry where the workers absorbed chromium. The hair samples for this experiment were compared with 71 male tanneries and 53 male non-exposed chromium factory workers at four tanneries in southern Ontario. Subjects were similar in age, race and socio-economic conditions. Hair samples to be cleaned, ashed in a low temperature ashing furnace, and analyzed by flameless atomic absorption spectrometry.
