著名的天文学家和科普作家卡尔·萨根曾提出一个极为深刻的问题：物理学定律容许无限发达的文明做些什么？又严禁他们做什么？卡尔·萨根推测,在遥远的将来,无限发达的文明将可能实现一些今天我们看来不可思议的奇迹(甚至实现像“暴胀论”创始人艾伦·H·古斯提出的用9千克物质再造一个宇宙的这类疯狂梦想)。但仍有些事情,人们一直梦寐以求,不断有人绞尽脑汁论证它的可行性,但却永远是一个神话。用物理学家的话说,“宇宙禁止这种事情发生”。时间机器、空间捷径以及超光速运动可能就是这种事情,或称之为宇宙三禁律。时间机器：美梦难圆自从美国科幻小说鼻祖威尔斯1985年出版《时间机器》一书以来,关于制造时间机器、实现时间旅行便一度成为科幻小说、影视中的热门题材,甚至有些泛滥。“时间机器”,这个怪物确实让人激动又忐忑不安。如果真能返回过去,那就意味着可以返老还童,重塑人生,甚至是再造人类乃至地球和宇宙的历史!
