Since Gross and Lapiere first discovered collagenase in the skin of tadpoles in 1962 as the first member of the matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs), a series of members of the MMP family have been successively discovered. At least 19 MMPs have so far been found . MMPs are a class of zinc-dependent proteolytic enzymes involved in the degradation of extracellular matrix. They play an extremely important role in the renewal and remodeling of the extracellular matrix (ECM) in the growth and development of organisms as well as the pathological damage in diseases. All matrix metalloproteinases are inhibited by the natural inhibitor of metalloproteinase tissue inhibitor (TIMPS). The balance between the two in wound repair, tissue reconstruction, angiogenesis and scarring
