14世纪到20世纪初,生活在我国新疆及中亚地区的维吾尔族等突厥语民族共同使用的语言,在国际上比较普遍地称为察哈台语。用于记录察哈台语的文字叫做察哈台文。察哈台文是由阿拉伯字母为基础的哈喀尼亚文(喀拉汗文)演变而成的。这种文字使用了阿拉伯文的28个字母,同时从波斯文中借用了P,t?,?,g4个字母,再加上有时表示单辅音?,有时代表双辅音n′g(′为隔音符号)的字母?,以及hεmzε,一共有34个字母。
