The rapid development of advanced automotive control systems requires a new, more powerful communications protocol to ensure that the network supports distributed control systems in the vehicle. In high-end applications, FlexRay protocol can support high-speed bus system. Such systems have proven performance and fault tolerance, and can support distributed control for line-controlled safety, collision avoidance, power transmission and driver support systems. The article begins with an introduction to the FlexRay protocol, and then we review the current application of high-end automotive networks and describe the role of FlexRay in various applications. We will specifically discuss functional safety and fault tolerance. Our discussion focused on FlexRay’s inherent flexibility and its important role in optimizing solutions to multiple problems. We will also compare the FlexRay protocol with the ByteFlight and CAN protocols in several important ways. The article will also list examples of specific semiconductor products designed to achieve high performance, space-saving footprint, and cost-effectiveness.
