2009年7月11日,我国学术界的两位泰斗——任继愈先生、季羡林先生先后在北京去世。消息传出,举国震悼。任继愈先生生前为国家图书馆名誉馆长,是著名哲学家、宗教学家、历史学家、新中国宗教学研究奠基者,对我国哲学、宗教学、历史学、图书馆学等多学科的创立和建设做出了重大贡献;季羡林先生生前为北京大学资深教授,是国际著名东方学家、印度学家、梵语语言学家、文学翻译家、教育家,在语言学、文化学、历史学、佛教学、印度学和比较文学等方面建树卓著。二位先生不仅学术精深,而且品德高尚,堪为一代宗师,他们的去世是我国文化学术界的重大损失。任继愈先生、季羡林先生生前都曾亲临莫高窟考察,他们撰写和主编的许多著作对我院大部分研究人员都具有指导和启示的意义。为了表达我们对任继愈、季羡林先生的怀念之情,本刊特发表敦煌研究院樊锦诗院长的2篇唁函以及本院三位学者写的纪念文章。
On July 11, 2009, the two leading academics in our country, Ren Jiyu and Ji Jiulian, died successively in Beijing. The news spread nationwide mourning. Mr. Ren Jiyu was an honorary curator of the National Library before his death. He is a famous philosopher, religious scientist, historian and founder of religious studies in New China. He established the multi-disciplines of philosophy, religion, history and library science in China Mr. Ji Xianlin, a former professor at Peking University, was an internationally renowned orientalist, Indian scholar, Sanskrit linguist, literary translator and educator. In his studies in linguistics, culture and history Buddhism, Indian Studies and Comparative Literature. The two gentlemen are not only highly academic but also noble in character, making them the great masters of history. Their death is a great loss to our cultural and academic circles. Mr. Ren Jiyu and Mr. Ji Xianlin visited Mogao Grottoes in their lifetime, and many of the works they wrote and edited have the significance of guiding and enlightenment for most of our researchers. In order to express our nostalgia for Ren Jiyu and Ji Xianlin, we have published two letters from Dean Fan Jinhui of Dunhuang Academy and memorials from three scholars of our hospital.
