Cyanamid, a U.S. company, has been approved by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to allow field trials of a new type of genetically engineered recombinant biopesticide. This biopesticide is the genetically modified Autographa californica nuclear polyhedrosis virus (V8EG.TDEL-AaIT). This field trial allows limited testing of cotton, vegetables and tobacco in 12 states. This baculovirus has been modified with insect-specific toxins obtained from the North American scorpion Androtonus australis to accelerate insect death. “Natural baculoviruses provide people with a suitable way to control pests but it usually takes 4 to 5 days to stop the pests, but the pests are sufficient to cause significant damage to the crops during this time, Lantz Crawley, Ph.D., deputy director of Cyanamid Agri-Products Research Group. ”Through the reorganization of the baculovirus genome, we expect its control of insects of interest to be about 60% faster than its natural counterpart.“ ”
