阜新市是因煤而立,由煤而兴的资源型城市,煤炭资源的开发历史悠久。全市人口193万,面积为10,355平方公里,下辖两县五区,即阜新蒙古族自治县、彰武县、清河门区、海州区、太平区、细河区和新邱区。阜新的矿产资源比较丰富,已发现矿种43种,有矿产地240余处,以煤炭和黄金资源著称,另有硅砂、玛瑙石、麦饭石、膨润土、石灰石、沸石、珍珠石、草炭等20多种非金属矿产,铁、铅、锌、银、铜等金属矿产也比较丰富,尤其是煤炭、黄金、玛瑙、麦饭石
