錯叶用韻具有明顯的時代差異,主要集中在先秦和唐五代兩個時期。這兩個時代的音樂都節奏繁複,而錯叶用韻詞調受音樂影響具有用韻繁複,有主韻、副韻之分,副韻可以變動的特點,顯示出詞韻無法兼顧到所有音樂節奏的情形。錯叶用韻使歌辭句短、韻多,這是造成唐五代詞促碎的原因之一。
