This paper uses Hinkel’s (2003) analytical framework to study the writing features of English as a foreign language learner, compares it with the syntactic and lexical features of English speakers and L2 learners in Hinkel’s study, And vocabulary may be the use of the problem. Participants were 58 sophomores in English majoring in advanced western English writing at a Western university. The corpus analyzed is a description of one of two topics completed by the subject in the final examination. The results show that foreign language learners are limited by their language proficiency and over-reliance on the most commonly used syntactic and lexical features in texts and have similarities. Finally, this article points out that teaching practice should focus on improving students ’syntactic and lexical abilities and encourage students to think independently and cultivate students’ critical thinking and creative writing ability.
