我认为山茶花最适宜为我国的国花。理由如下:(一)山茶花栽培历史悠久,向来为我国名花,深受广大群众喜爱。早在一千四百多年前的隋炀帝,就曾赋诗吟颂山茶花(海蕾)曰:“雨罢春花润,日落暝霞晖。海蕾舒欲尽,山樱开飞来。”宋朝诗人刘克庄吟诗赞美山茶花的傲霜斗雪、气节坚贞精神。诗曰:“凌寒强比松筠秀,吐艳色惊岁月非。冰雪纷纭真性在,根株粗大众园稀。”明朝文学家杨慎,吟诗“赞”山茶花之傲气,“羞”朝官之腐败。诗曰:“绿叶红英斗雪开,黄蜂粉蝶不曾来。海边珠树无颜色,羞把琼枝照玉台。”近代文学家鲁迅歌颂山茶花为“爱国志士”、“战斗英雄”等等。
