The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences announced on October 4 that it will award the 2005 Nobel Prize in Physics to two American scientists and one German physicist who made outstanding contributions in optics. Roy Glauber of Harvard University received a prize of half of the Nobel Prize in Physics (1.07 million euros, or 1.28 million U.S. dollars) for his contribution to the quantum theory of optical coherence. The other half was awarded to John Hall at the University of Colorado and Theodor Hansch at the University of Maximilian in Ludwig-München, Germany, in recognition of their work in precision laser spectroscopy, including optical combing contribution.
