太平天国建都南京后五个多月(1853年九月初),上海小刀会(天地会的支派)领袖刘丽川等率众起义上海,占领县城,井先后攻克外围各州县,和太平天国遥相呼应,对当时局势发生很大影响,他们井和太平天国发生了一些关系。对于这二者的关系,研究太平天国史者有两种相反的结论。萧一山等说太平天国拒绝刘丽川加入;罗尔纲则说“太平天国曾经主动地争取刘丽川小刀会的加入,曾经做过企图赴援刘丽川的准备工作。”据我研究的结果,认为这两种说法都还有值得商榷的地方。
