The authors found that 3-O-(3’,3’-dimethylsuccinyl)-betulinic acid (2) obtained by structural modification of betulinic acid (1) has strong anti-HIV activity in screening natural products with anti-HIV activity. The related compound oleanolic acid (3) is less active against HIV, but its derivative 3-O-(3’,3’-dimethylsuccinyl)-oleanolic acid (4) has strong anti-HIV activity. The anti-HIV activity of ursolic acid and oleanolic acid is quite similar and the structure is similar.
