On December 14, 2006, Ban Ki-moon was sworn into office and paid tribute and gratitude to outgoing United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan. At the end of 2006, Annan, 68, was finally able to unload the heaviest burden in the world and bid farewell to the endless hardships behind the scenery. In the past ten years, Annan accompanied the United Nations through the peaks and valleys in his political career. Some call him “the world’s chief diplomat,” while others criticize him as “the worst manager in the world.” Some people also call him “the world president” and “secular tsar.” But maybe one of the words in the Biblical Matthew Gospel is more appropriate for him: “God bless the Messenger of Peace because they should be called the children of God!”
