A·S·拜厄特的短篇小说集《马蒂斯的故事》以法国“野兽派”画家亨利·马蒂斯的画作为引子,讲述了三则关于艺术与艺术家的故事。在这些短篇作品中,作家拜厄特以色彩明丽的文字与画家马蒂斯华丽绚烂的画作相映成趣,表达了自己对马蒂斯的知音礼赞,两位大师之间展开了一场关乎艺术与生活本真的深刻对话。本文拟从艺术与生活、生命与死亡、色彩与文字、女人与女体四个层面多视角解读拜厄特对于艺术、生命、人性和死亡等诸多命题的哲理性思考与探讨。
