明代杰出的农民科学家喻本元,喻本亨俩兄弟所编著的《元亨疗马集》,即《牛马经》,是我国三百七十多年来流传最广、深受广大民间兽医所珍视而且必须阅读的一部巨著。喻氏兄弟毕生从事兽医实践,广泛发掘、整理我国历代的兽医古籍;到处寻师访友,充分汲取劳动人民的医术经验。他俩以惊人的毅力,经六十多年之久,终于在晚年成书。至清初曾把《元亨疗马集》选入《四库全书》,重点加以珍藏。当时这部著作曾传到国外,如日本、朝鲜,越南等国,它对祖国和世界的兽医学,旁及农学、医药学、生物学的发展,作出了重大贡献。
