The world economy stagnated in the first three years of the 1990s, while the Asian economy still maintained its momentum of growth. In particular, the growth rate in East Asia is as high as 5%. Since 1994, as the world economy has improved, the global demand for commodities has expanded significantly. The active international market has provided favorable opportunities for export trade and further contributed to the sustained and rapid growth of the Asian economy. According to the Asian Development Outlook for Asia 1994 published by the Asian Development Bank, the economic growth rates in developing countries and regions in Asia and the Pacific in the past two years will be 7% and 7.2% respectively.
