大敖联围地处新会市东部,西江下游一个江心岛,南面与中山市横栏镇相邻、南边邻近斗门县,南闸工程位于大敖联围的东南端。全岛集雨面积为36.53km~2,围内地势北高南低,绝大部分耕地田面高程为-0.3m～0.3m;属低沙田地区。全镇耕地面积为4.55万亩,总人口为2.73万人,主要盛产稻谷、塘鱼、甘蔗、香蕉等水果,属渔米水果之乡。1992年工农业总产值为2.42亿元。
