BP has always been one of the world’s oil giants. In the 1950s and 1960s it was one of the world’s famous “seven sisters of oil.” The US’s “Petroleum Information Weekly” named the world’s 50 largest oil companies in 1993. BP ranks ninth (eighth place in 1992). If it is not counted as the national oil company of the oil producing country, it ranks fifth.
