The Joseon Dynasty and the Ming Dynasty maintained close and friendly relations with their feudal lords and honored their common Confucian concept of Hua Yi. In the framework of Hua Yi, the neighboring countries and ethnic groups were positioned accordingly. Therefore, after the Ming and Qing Dynasties alternated and even after the establishment of the Qing Dynasty for a long time, the Confucian concept of Hua Yi deeply influenced the DPRK’s position toward the Ming Dynasty and the Qing Dynasty, and it was abundantly reflected in related “random” novels. This essay combs the creative features of novels in different periods and explores the process of acceptance and development of Confucianism and Hua Yi in ancient Korean society.
