The aircraft steams currently used by the U.S. naval aircraft carriers are bulky, noisy and energy inefficient. As a result, the U.S. Navy has repeatedly studied new principles of catapults to replace them, all of which have been abandoned for some technical reasons. In the 1990s, when the Navy began designing the next generation of aircraft carriers (first CVN-21 and later CVN-78), it proposed a very advanced concept, the All Electric Ship. It requires that the carrier’s power transmission will be based on electric power instead of using traditional mechanical means such as steam and hydraulic pressure. One of the most important technological leaps is that the steam catapults will be replaced by electromagnetic catapults.
