Background Although anemia is one of many obvious clinical features of visceral leishmaniasis, the factors involved in its pathogenesis are well understood. Although there are several causes of anemia in these patients, it may involve swollen spleen destruction and sequestration of erythrocytes, immune mechanisms, and changes in erythrocyte membrane permeability. DESIGN AND METHODS To investigate whether erythrocytes from patients with leishmaniasis were coated with IgG, blood samples from 67 patients were tested before (1 day), during (30 days), and after (90 days) antimony treatment, The erythrocyte-related IgG, circulating immune complexes (CICs) and rheumatoid factor (RF) were detected.
