史沫特莱是美国进步女记者和作家。1929年她以法兰克福报特派员的身份来到中国,在中国生活了12年之久,期间撰写了大量的文字,向世界介绍当时的中国。她留下了5本关于中国的著作,其中《伟大的道路:朱德的生平和时代》是她生命最后几年的倾心力作。本文从中国国家博物馆馆藏文物中有关史沫特莱收集的朱德史料着手,探讨史沫特莱执意写作朱德传记的缘起,以及她为写作该书收集素材的艰辛过程;并通过细致比对她收集的朱德史料与《伟大的道路:朱德的生平和时代》中的相关内容,揭示了馆藏的史沫特莱收集的朱德史料就是其写作《伟大的道路:朱德的生平和时代》的素材来源。它们既反映了史沫特莱严谨求实的创作态度,也是研究朱德其人乃至中国革命的珍贵史料。
Smedley is a progressive American journalist and writer. In 1929, she came to China as a special correspondent for Frankfurt, and lived in China for 12 years. During this period, she wrote lots of texts to introduce the world to China at that time. She has left five books on China, of which “The Great Path: The Life and Era of Zhu De” is the most devoted work of her last years. This article starts with the collection of Chu Teh-lei’s historical materials collected from the collections of the National Museum of China and discusses the origins of Smedley’s insistent writing on Chu Teh’s biography and the painstaking process of collecting material for the book. Zhu De’s historical materials and “The Great Path: The Life and Era of Zhu De”, revealing that Chu Teh-lei’s collection of historical materials is the material source of his writing “The Great Path: The Life and Era of Zhu De”. They not only reflect Strudel’s rigorous and realistic creative attitude, but also a valuable historical data for studying Chu Deqi and even the Chinese revolution.
