In early December, BASF announced that it has successfully produced the first batch of commercial butanediol (BDO) using renewable raw materials, which will be provided to customers for testing for commercial use. The production process is based on patented fermentation technology from Genomatica (headquartered in California), using glucose as feedstock. Butanediol produced from renewable raw materials is nearly identical in quality to butanediol made from petrochemical raw materials. BASF also intends to expand its portfolio of butanediol derivatives based on renewable raw materials, including PolyTHF (polytetrahydrofuran). The product is produced by BASF’s Intermediary Division. The use of renewable raw materials produced butanediol and petrochemical raw materials used in the quality of butanediol
