Smartphones are an integral part of modern life. But a new study finds that smartphones force people to use their hands in ways that have never before been possible in the human evolutionary history, thereby changing the shape and function of the human brain. Experts find that people who use touchscreen phones every day have a bigger, stronger somatosensory cortex. This area is located in the center of the brain and controls thumb movements. The longer you use your smartphone, the more your brain and hands are connected. The Swiss team followed 37 volunteers for 10 days. Of those volunteers, 27 used touchscreen phones and 10 used traditional phones with fixed keys. They monitored volunteers’ brain waves and found that people using modern touchscreen phones changed the somatosensory cortex
