On December 11, 2013, an outbreak of typhoid fever was reported to a vocational college in the suburbs of Xiantao City, Hubei Province. By December 22, a total of 74 cases were reported, of which 72 were student cases with an attack rate of 1.10% (72/6533). From the six canteen workers and four chef students sera were detected in the fatal response to Salmonella typhi, from the blood of 69 patients, 24 strains of Salmonella typhi were isolated. The survey revealed that the outbreak may have been caused by past infections of Salmonella typhimurium among canteen employees and pollution of the canteen-related environment, leading to multiple days of sick students, multiple meals and multiple window exposures. It is suggested that monitoring and early warning of communicable diseases in primary medical institutions should be further strengthened, prevention and control of intestinal infectious diseases in schools should be highly valued, and emphases should be laid on strengthening comprehensive management of canteens and school health and preventing “sickness”.
