Chrisp et al. (1978) have found that fly ash collected from a power plant burning low-sulfur and high-ash coal contains mutagens, which can be extracted from horse serum and horse serum is used as a standard solution for lung cells. This finding caught the concern that the fly ash released by boilers burning bark and chips in the factories of large forestry companies might contain the same mutagens. Using five different strains of histidine auxotrophic Salmonella typhimurium, we tested samples from six different plants across the United States. None of the mutagens that contained the available serum were found. Only one of the samples contained Extraction with hot benzene
