位于粤赣边山区的始兴县是一个具有悠久历史的客家人聚居的地区。居住在这块穷乡僻壤的客家人,勤劳俭朴,日出而作,开垦土地,藉以生存。为避免跟当地土著居民发生各种争执矛盾,为防范盗贼及土匪抢劫民财,免受侵袭,必须建筑坚固的住房(围楼)而自卫保安全。故在明朝末年、清代中期至民国初年期间,邑境各村村民纷纷建造围楼,形成了“有村必有围,无围不成村”的客家人独特的建筑风格。据统计资料,全县建有各种大小围楼共有335座,至1989年底仍保留有198座。
Shixing County, located in the mountainous areas of Guangdong, Jiangxi and Jiangxi, is a Hakka enclave with a long history. Hakka people living in this backcountry, industrious and frugal, sunrise, land reclamation, in order to survive. In order to avoid various conflicts and disputes with the indigenous peoples in the region, in order to prevent thieves and bandits from robbing their wealth and from being attacked, they must construct solid housing (enclosures) to protect themselves. Therefore, during the late Ming dynasty, from the middle of the Qing Dynasty to the early Republican period, villagers in all villages of Yi-jingqu built builders one after another, forming a unique architectural style of Hakka people, “a village must be surrounded and no enclave should be completed.” According to statistics, the county has a total of 335 various sizes of buildings, and there are still 198 at the end of 1989.
