1998年香港经受金融风暴扫荡之后,经济不景,娱乐事业也难免陷入低潮。港产电影倍受翻版 VCD的冲击,唱片业也深受其害,这一股股恶浪令不少香港艺人的收入大幅下降,不少艺人接片或开演唱会都减少了报酬。从来忌讳谈个人收入的香港艺人,在此时期更是将个人收入视为商业秘密而严加保守。不过凡事有例外,据新出版的《资本杂志》披露的“98香港演艺界最高收榜”,上榜艺人收入截至1998年11月19日,进军好莱坞电影的大哥成龙,虽然在港产贺岁片《我是谁》里,受翻版 VCD 的冲击而收入大受影响,但他在好莱坞拍了几部片了之后,光靠赚取美金,
After Hong Kong was hit by the financial turmoil in 1998, the economic downturn and the entertainment business inevitably dipped to a low ebb. Hong Kong-produced movies are so much hit by pirated VCDs that the record industry has suffered so badly that the income of many Hong Kong artists has plummeted.
