南美白对虾原产于中、南美洲,为世界三大优良对虾品种之一,南美白对虾体色半透明,个体大,生长速度快,对饵料要求低,对水环境适应能力强,肉质鲜嫩,可高密度养殖。其适盐性广,病害相对较少,产量高。该虾自1988年引进我国,目前在海淡水养殖中得到普遍推广,1988年天津市把南美白对虾养殖作为海淡水结构调整的养殖品种后,南美白对虾养殖在我市发展十分迅速,提高了产量,增加了农民的收入,取得了显著的经济效益和社会效益。在淡水养殖中主要是以池塘养殖南美白对虾模式为主,在大水面中并没有推广。
