Writing ability is of great importance to the students. How to improve the students’ writing ability is a difficult problem waiting to be solved. As an English teacher, I summed up some experience. Here, I would like to share it with all of the English teachers.
1. To improve students’ writing by enlarging their vocabulary. Words to writing is just like bricks to building, which are fundamental but very necessary and important. Without bricks and cement, you cannot build up high buildings. Without words, neither can you work out good articles. It’s a pity that many Chinese teachers and students ignore this. Many students find it really hard to remember words. They say it’s far easier to forget than to remember words. Even they have spent a lot of time remembering words, they will forget them some time later. In fact, we will find many ways to remember words if we keep on seeking. In class, the teacher should encourage students to remember words, suggesting possible ways to remember words, such as reading the words out while writing, preparing smart word cards, having dictations between classmates. Habits and interest are very important in the process of remembering words. We should instruct students to develop a good habit of remembering words. We should also arouse the potential interest inside students by all means, praising them when they’ve made some progress, inspiring their self-confidence in word contest, having dictations, making sentences using the words newly learnt, etc. My words to students: Don’t fear forgetting, just keep on trying and repeating. Don’t fear losing time and energy, a solid and strong vocabulary will repay you in the future.
2. To improve writing by reading. To read is a process of information reception and imitation. By receiving information from the outside, we become stronger and richer inside, by imitating others, we become experienced and knowledgeable. Maybe you will say it’s not like this, but in writing it’s really so. Young students are active in thinking, which accelerates the process of information reception and imitation, which in turn will surely strengthen their comprehension ability and language sense. When reading articles, students can have their eyesight enlarged, and at the same time review their already-learnt words they come across in the materials. So reading seems to be “kill two birds with one stone”.
3. To improve writing by strengthening listening and speaking. The four basic factors in English learning, namely, listening, speaking, reading and writing, interact with each other and benefit each other. With listening and speaking bettered, writing is certain to get enhanced. With the purpose of improving students’ writing, the teacher should make intended efforts to create possible conditions for students to practice listening and speaking. In class, the teacher should try to speak English as often as possible, setting a good example to students. Besides that, the teacher should design a variety of drills and activities aimed at practicing listening and speaking. While teaching and guiding students in class, the teacher should attach much attention to the choice of words and expressions. With all these drills and activities carried out, students will have themselves bathed in English, to listen, to speak, to think, to write, and finally end up in better writing.
4. To improve writing by writing English summaries and abstracts. Abstract writing means to write out the key points of an article, which is not just the simple summary of an article, but a serious recreation. To write abstracts and summaries helps students to know about the background of an article, to further understand the intention and thought of an article, to clearly outline the design or plot of an article, and end up improving their own ability in thinking and writing.
In short, how to improve students’ writing ability is a long process, which needs endless efforts.
