山东昌乐蓝宝石的发现,继在海南省文昌、福建省明溪、江苏省六合、黑龙江省穆棱之后,在早第三纪冲积、洪积、淤积层中发现赋存蓝宝石砂矿,同时在碱性玄武岩中发现了蓝宝石原生矿。昌乐蓝宝石具有晶体大、颜色纯正、无杂质少绺、品种多(中国海洋大学朱而勤教授分2大类19个品种)、质量好、品位高之特点。砂矿分布面积广,资源量大,是目前我国发现的最大的蓝宝石
